  Missouri Passes Proposition A: Minimum Wage Increase and Paid Sick Leave In November of 2024, Missouri voters passed  Proposition A  which increased the state’s minimum wage to $13.75 per hour starting Jan. 1, 2025 with additional increases annually thereafter and requires employers to provide paid sick leave to employees starting May 1, 2025.   Legal Challenges to Missouri’s Proposition A Missouri business groups have challenged the passage of this ballot measure by filing a lawsuit in December 2024 with the Missouri Supreme Court. The lawsuit challenges the ballot measure on the following grounds:   The Missouri Constitution requires ballot initiatives to contain a single subject. Proposition A contains at least two clear, unrelated subjects – minimum wage and earned sick leave.   The Missouri Constitution requires the title of the ballot measure to clearly express its single subject.   Maine Minimum Wage The Maine Department of Labor (MDOL) announced on September 11, 2024, that pursuant to Main law (26 Maine Rev. State. §664), the s tate minimum wage will increase from $14.15 to $14.65 per hour on January 1, 2025 , based on data recently made available by the US Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. Main law requires annual adjustments to the minimum wage based on the cost-of-living index CPI0W) for the Northeast Region.  Between August 2023 and August 2024, there was a 3.6% increase in the CPI-W.  In addition to the minimum wage, the new "tip wage," or service employee minimum wage, 2025, will be $7.33 per hour.  This means that service employees must receive at least a direct cash wage of $7.33 per hour from the employer.  The employer must be able to show that the employee received at least the minimum wage of $14.65 per hour when the direct wage and tips are combined at the end of the week.  The amount of tips necessary to...

CA Minimum Wage Increase in 2025 and Current COVID-19 Prevention Regulations

Minimum Wage Increase in 2025 Beginning on January 1, 2025, California’s minimum wage will increase from $16.00/hour to $16.50/hour. The increase applies to all employers of any size . Earlier this month, the Director of the CA Department of Finance determined and certified that this increase correlates to an increase in the Consumer Price Index of 3.18% based on a comparison of the period from July 1, 2023, to June 30, 2024, and July 1, 2002, to June 30, 2023. As a result of the increase in the minimum wage, the minimum salary for “white collar” exempt employees also will increase from $66,560 per year to $68,640 per year.
