July Is the New January – 2025

States and cities are as busy as ever passing new workplace regulations throughout the calendar year. Here is our mid-year report summarizing the notable labor and employment laws that take effect from roughly July through October.  Washington state has the most new laws taking effect this summer, ranging from fingerprint-based background checks for certain employees working in home care and long-term care to expansion of the state’s paid sick leave benefits. A number of other states and cities also have expanded paid and unpaid leave benefits, including Alaska, Colorado, Nevada, New York City, Oregon, and Vermont. Other common themes include pay transparency laws, as well as further limitations on noncompete agreements in the healthcare industry. This article provides a general snapshot of generally applicable labor and employment laws taking effect soon.
